“It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.” - Harry S. Truman
Technically it's been a few days since Kevin Ke from International Bilingual School at Hsinchu Science Park (IBSH) created this website, yet today marks its official debut in the MUN society. The idea of creating a website like this has always been there, yet there's a reason why it took so long to become a reality. The entire process has been rocky, starting from putting the dream of gathering high school MUN club leaders from all over Taiwan on a google document and recruiting people who were willing to take the burden of organizing the entire event without pay and promise. Therefore, I would like to hereby express my gratitude to Erica Chu and Monica Kung from Fushing Private School and Joseph Ban from TMUNDA. Our first symposium would have never happened and I would not be sitting here typing had you guys chosen to not be part of it.
Model United Nations has been a popular extracurricular activity in the past 60 years, yet it wasn't until recently when MUN clubs began to sprout up among high schools in Taiwan. In the past 2 years numerous conferences have been created and the number continues to grow, and so does the number of MUNers on this land not recognized by U.N.. We have realized that although people here do share own passion for MUN, they lack experiences, resources, and help that the established high school MUN community could potentially provide. Language barrier further obstructs the development of MUN among local schools in Taiwan. But we believe that MUN should be global and inclusive in its nature, and the students here should be able to pursue it if they have the will.
Thus, over 25 club leaders from the entire nation showed up in our first MUN symposium in the summer of 2013, working collaboratively to tackle some of the current obstacles they face through inter-school cooperation and information sharing. This website is a direct result of the symposium, created to serve and connect any high school MUN communities in Taiwan.
I have been doing Model United Nations ever since I entered high school, yet never had I thought that I would receive the greatest gift from it near the end of my high school MUN career - to be able to be part of this whole thing. I really really really really do hope this website and the organization behind it will grow and flourish, but let's not talk about it as of now and celebrate this moment! WOOHOO Way to go TAIWAN HIGH SCHOOl MUNers :D
